Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s infant son returned home Friday after spending time on a ventilator, The Washington Post reported.
According to the outlet, two-month old Joseph August “Gus” Buttigieg also went through three weeks of medical treatment and rode 125 miles in an ambulance.
Buttigieg, age 39, and his husband Chasten, age 32, welcomed Gus and his twin sister Penelope Rose Buttigieg in August.
Last month, People reported that Gus spent Halloween in the hospital.
Buttigieg went on parental leave in mid-August, a move which drew both criticism and support. Critics questioned if he should have taken leave while Congress worked on the recently-passed infrastructure bill that addressed national transportation issues and supporters lauded the decision for helping to ease the stigma of fathers taking paternal leave.
“Paternity leave is about your family but it is also about you as a productive person in whatever role you have, whether that’s working in the private sector or public sector,” said Rep. Colin Allred (D-Tex.), the first congressman to take paternity leave.
Neither Buttigieg nor his husband specified what illness their son was battling. However, Chasten said that his son was feeling better as of Friday.
“A special thank you to the countless medical professionals who helped Gus (and his dads and sister) along the way,” said Chasten in a tweet.
Buttigieg said that he is was “thankful, relieved, and reflecting a great deal on the mixture of joy, terror, and love that is parenting,” as his son was released from the hospital.
