Niagara Falls, NY (WBEN) Sightseers in the Falls got a little more than they bargained for as they saw a car at the top of Niagara Falls. The car was stuck near the brink. One person was rescued via helicopter.
State Parks Police Capt. Christopher Rola says the initial call came just before noon. "Dispatch was notified of a black vehicle in the Niagara River near the pedestrian bridge floating down the brink of the Falls. Our patrol arrived and observed the vehicle, and contacted our partners," says Rola. He says one woman was in the vehicle.
According to WGRZ, the woman is deceased.
Rola says because of the area where the vehicle was, which was 50 yards from the brink of the falls, the swift water team was unable to make a recovery. "We contacted the Coast Guard and their helicopter and rescue swimmer came out and was able to make a recovery of the operator," says Rola.
Rola says the woman is an area resident, but would not specify which community because family has not been notified. Rola noted the woman was in her late 60s. "There was no movement of the female operator at that time," says Rola.
The investigation into why this happened is still ongoing. "She drove in in between the pedestrian bridge and the vehicle bridge," notes Rola. He adds witnesses are being interviewed.
