CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Animal rescue groups are stepping up efforts to adopt dogs from other countries ahead of a ban next month imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after a dog that came through O’Hare International Airport tested positive for rabies.
Good World Animal Rescue and Protection is asking people interested in adopting or fostering dogs from Azerbaijan to contact them right away.
The group said it has a flight scheduled into the U.S. July 10, days before the ban takes effect.
The CDC announced last week it’s temporarily suspending dogs coming in from more than 100 countries it deems “high risk.”
A dog that came through O’Hare on June 10 tested positive for rabies and was euthanized.
Thirty-two other dogs and one cat from Azerbaijan were on the flight. Health officials are checking to see if any of the other animals are infected.
