(WWJ) A metro Detroit doctor turned to social media to vent his frustration after watching several of his unvaccinated patients die needlessly of COVID-19.
Dr. Matthew Trunsky is on the frontlines of the pandemic, treating pulmonary critical care patients at Beaumont Health Network Hospital in Troy.
Earlier this month he posted on Facebook some of the thing he heard in a two-day period from unvaccinated COVID patients, including: "I'd rather die than take the vaccine," "I'm too healthy. I don't have COVID," and "I want a different doctor. I don't believe you."
Dr. Trunsky said 90% of the COVID-19 patients he’s treating in the hospital are unvaccinated.
The problem?
"Disbelief that the vaccine works," Trunsky told WWJ's Dr. Deanna Lites.
"People believe it does not."
"One patient didn't take the shot because he son said not to. We've had demands for medications that are not yet FDA approved, such as ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine."
Six out of the eight unvaccinated patients he posted about have since died, the doctor said, while the other two remain critically ill.
Meanwhile, some patients and families are taking out their frustrations on the medical staff.
"I've had people get angry at me from time to time because I often have to deliver bad news. But the amount of anger I'm seeing and the frequency with which we're seeing it just struck me," Trunsky said.
Trunsky said misinformation and conspiracy theories are leading to vaccine hesitancy, and while he may be frustrated, he continues to provide the best care he can.
"Every patient with COVID here gets the same great care," the doctor added. "There's not a variation because someone had the vaccine or they didn't."
