Republican Florida Rep. Anthony Sabatini and U.S. Rep. Matt Geatz, along with other Florida politicians, want Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel out.
According to tweets posted Wednesday by Sabatini, they are calling for a special meeting of the state’s Republican party Jan. 14 to vote on whether McDaniel should be terminated as chair at the Jan. 27 RNC meeting. He also posted a petition with 30 signatures.
“As goes Florida, so goes the nation,” Sabatini said.
Writers of the petition argue that McDaniel “failed in her position as RNC chair in the 2022 election cycle and has yielded extremely unimpressive election results for the GOP in the past three election cycles.”
Shortly before the recent midterms, Republicans were projected to potentially gain control of both congressional chambers, as a sitting president’s party has historically not fared well in the first midterms of that president’s term. However, the GOP gained only a narrow majority in the House of Representatives and Democrats retained control of the Senate.
Some link this poor showing to the influence of former President Donald Trump. Late last month, McDaniel announced that the RNC would conduct a review of the midterms to reassess the party’s goals.
Although the GOP generally did not do well in the midterms, the story was different in Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis handily won reelection. This month, a poll found that the Florida politician’s overall popularity had surpassed Trump’s.
“The eyes of the nation are on Florida as a leading conservative state whose grassroots electorate determines the future of the GOP,” said the petition shared by Sabatini. His suggestion for the party’s new leader is Harmeet K. Dhillon, a California attorney.
“Republicans – let’s win this! Please join me in my campaign for new leadership of the RNC. I’m the only member of the RNC stepping up to the challenge,” Dhillon said Dec. 7. “We’ll be rolling out ways that you can help in coming days. All sincere suggestions welcome.”
According to NBC News, Florida State Sen. Joe Gruters, chairman of the Florida Republican party, is expected to back McDaniel. POLITICO reported that conservative youth group Turning Point USA recently conducted a poll on the subject and that results favored Dhillon.
