Charlie Haeger, a former MLB pitcher whose brief career included tenures with the White Sox, Padres, Dodgers, Mariners and Red Sox, was found dead in the Grand Canyon in an apparent suicide, per multiple reports.
Haeger, 37, was wanted on suspicion of murder following the death of his ex-girlfriend, who was fatally shot Friday night in Scottsdale. Per the Associated Press, the former pitcher's abandoned car was found Saturday near Flagstaff, Arizona, 118 miles north of Scottsdale. Police had considered Haeger “armed and dangerous.”
His body was reportedly found around 4 p.m. PT on a trail along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Haeger’s roommate said he heard gunshots upon returning home Friday night and saw the former big-leaguer leave the room of his alleged victim with a gun in hand. The male roommate told authorities he fled after Haeger pointed the gun in his direction, informing a neighbor who then proceeded to call 911.
The right-handed Haeger didn’t experience much success at the major-league level, compiling a dismal 6.40 ERA across 34 lifetime appearances including 10 starts. His career in MLB spanned from 2006-10. Selected by the White Sox as a 25th-round pick in the 2001 Draft, the knuckle-baller last pitched professionally in 2013, logging 142 innings as a Red Sox farmhand.
An investigation is ongoing, according to police.
