Earlier this spring, a man in Peru was found with human remains estimated to be 600 to 800 years old inside a food delivery cooler bag.

When authorities found him with it, he said it was his “spiritual girlfriend.” Although the mummy is believed to be male, the man said he named it Juanita.

To learn more about relationships with spirits and how we cope with loss, Mike Rogers talks to Mike Huberty, the founder of American Ghost Walks, on this week's episode of “Something Offbeat.”

Huberty and host Mike Rogers discuss whether the man in Peru is really in love with the ancient mummy, or if he’s just trying to sell it. They also discuss different cultural attitudes towards death and other mummy “girlfriend” stories – including the eerie story of Count Carl von Cosel and Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos, whose corpse he uninterred and brought to live at his home.

Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
