General Motors plans to pump a half-billion dollars into its Arlington assembly plant to keep building the company's most profitable vehicles, their full size SUVs like Chevrolet Tahoes and Suburbans, GMC Yukons and the Cadillac Escalade.

On Thursday, the Arlington plant's executive director John Urbanic said the investment will help the factory "sustain and maintain current staffing levels."

Next year, GM will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Arlington plant's opening.

GM is Arlington's third largest employer, behind only the Arlington school district and UT-Arlington.

It is GM's third announcement this week of major investments in its plants that build gasoline-powered trucks, per the Detroit Free Press.

So, why invest in making more gas guzzlers as the electric age dawns?

"The sales of the popular trucks are funding GM's transition to EVs, which currently offer thin to no profits, "Freep wrote, adding, "In February, CEO Mary Barra said GM is nowhere near to getting battery costs down enough to make EVs as profitable as their gasoline-powered counterparts."
