Google reveals top search trends for 2021

As the year 2021 comes to a close, Google is releasing its annual "Year in Search" report highlighting the most popular search trends of the year.

Google said the number one searched for thing in America over the past year was the NBA. That's followed by DMX, Gabby Petito, Kyle Rittenhouse and Brian Laundrie. Rounding out the top 10 searches are Mega Millions, AMC stock, stimulus check, Georgia Senate race and Squid Game.

Americans were more curious than ever in 2021, searching questions like "how to be eligible for stimulus check," "how to pronounce Dogecoin," and "how to style straight leg jeans."

Other "how to" trends include "how to be more attractive," "how to be happy alone," "how to be a baddie," "how to pronounce quinoa," "how to pronounce Elon Musk son's name," and "how to style a sweater vest."

The most searched for meme was Bernie Sanders' mittens, the most searched sports team was Boston Red Sox, and the most searched song was "Drivers License" by Olivia Rodrigo.

When it comes to athletes, Americans were most interested in Tiger Woods, Simone Biles, Henry Ruggs III, Odell Beckham Jr. and Aaron Rodgers.

Still stuck at home, Americans were brushing up on their culinary skills and searching for recipes. The top searched recipes were TikTok pasta, bacon jam, birria tacos, crockpot chicken and hamantaschen.

The coronavirus was top of mind for some people in 2021, with top searches for "near me" including COVID vaccine and COVID testing. People were also searching for movies, bars and bowling near them.

When it comes to "this or that," Americans searched for "effect or affect" more than any other "or" comparison. "Barbie, Bratz or fairy," "allergies or COVID," "bones or no bones, and "bougie or boujee" rounded out the top five.

On a global scale, Google said the world searched "how to heal" more than ever in 2021. Searches for affirmations also reached an all-time high worldwide this year. The world searched for "sea shanties" more in 2021 than in any other year, "soulmate" was searched more than ever before, and searches for "how to maintain mental health" hit an all time high.
