Governor Gavin Newsom stated during a press conference on Monday that a preliminary investigation has indicated the massive I-10 Freeway fire over the weekend was started with "malice intent."

Newsom said CalFire detectives are still working on identifying a suspect or suspects in the arson investigation but can confirm their belief is "it was arson, and it was done and set intentionally."

Despite early concerns for the freeway's deck integrity, crews determined it is "much stronger than originally assessed." However, Newsom said this does not rule out the potential for complete demolition of that stretch of the 10 Freeway. That decision will come once further information is gathered.

Newsom said investigators received preliminary tips, but urges anyone with information to come forward and call a hotline at 800-468-4408.

The fire, reported initially at around 12:20 AM Saturday morning was set within the fence line of the storage business operating below the freeway, which was littered with vehicles, pallets, and other materials.

It is still unclear when the road will be reopened, but a Southern California structural engineer told KNX News that replacing the damaged deck could take months.
