ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - On Tuesday, the Missouri Department of Mental Health released recommendations to the Missouri Board of Education about the state of mental health among children in the state.

Missouri Department of Mental Health Director Valerie Huhn and State Education Commissioner Margie Vandeven were among those who presented to the Board of Education.

Among the presentations was about the use of social media and the effects it cause to the mental health of young people.

"I'm a parent, and we know anecdotally how big it is in our kids lives and how big it across all adolescents," said Huhn. "It is definitely their growing way to obtain information and to communicate with their peers."

Huhn says the use of social media leads to loneliness and can make people worst about themselves.

"There are so many values with these platforms, but how they are impacting our kids is something that we need to spend our time on."
