Judge sentences repeated rapist to 8 months probation as victim warns he'll strike again

A victim delivered her own verdict after a man pleaded guilty to numerous sexual attacks and was sentenced to what many considered a slap on the wrist.

He'll strike again.

That's what a woman known only as 'MM' in court filings said after Judge Matthew Murphy ruled that "incarceration … isn't appropriate" for rapist Matthew Belter and sentenced him instead to eight years of probation.

Belter, 20, had pleaded guilty to third-degree rape, attempted sexual abuse and two counts of second degree sexual abuse in cases involving four teenage girls who had been attacked over 18 months at parties inside Belter's family's mansion in Lewiston, New York.

He faced eight years in prison.

"It's just going to make him more comfortable doing this in the future," MM said to CBS News. "This is a pattern. He will offend again."

Belter's attorneys argued that he was 'tremendously remorseful' for attacking four teens, including MM when she was 16 years old. She didn't want to hear about his 'remorse,' telling CBS she and the other victims will never be able to rest easy until something lands him behind bars.

"I don't believe it for one second," MM said. "He was saying whatever it takes for him to get his best outcome and it worked. … I will have to live with this for the rest of my life, knowing that he's walking the streets and that another girl can be a victim of his any day now. It's terrifying."
