A carjacking incident last night in Bristol, Conn., resulted in a police car crashing into a local diner, said authorities.
According to a news release from the Bristol Police Department, 39-year-old Jimmie Shoemaker-Gonzalez stole the vehicle and led officers in a pursuit. Audacy reporter Dave Mager of WTIC News Talk was on the scene and provided a detailed report.
It all started when officers arrived to assist the Farmington Police Department with a carjacking incident. During the investigation, Shoemaker-Gonzalez managed to take control of the vehicle.
As he fled from police, Shoemaker-Gonzalez crashed into Palma’s Restaurant at 100 Strafford Ave. in Bristol.
“We hope everyone is having a better day than we are,” said a Thursday Facebook post from Palma’s Diner that includes photos of the damage. “Despite all the craziness, we are writing to let you know that everyone inside the diner at the time of the accident is safe despite being shaken up by all of this. At the moment we don’t know when all of this will be resolved or when we will reopen. Since everyone is safe this is of little concern to us. We will post an update as we know more.”
Shoemaker-Gonzalez was arrested at the scene for larceny in the first degree and was being held on $1 million bond as of Friday.
“He is currently waiting arraignment at New Britain Superior Court,” said Bristol police. “This incident is under investigation by the Office of the Inspector General and all requests for information should be directed to their office.”
As of Friday, a photo of Shoemaker-Gonzalez was not available.
