Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton is battling life-threatening pneumonia, according to her family.
Her daughter, McKenna Kelley says the 55-year-old gymnastics legend is unable to breathe on her own and is "fighting for her life" in the ICU.
Kelley revealed the news on a crowd-funding page, saying her mother does not have insurance and needs help paying for her medical bills.
"My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life. She is not able to breathe on her own. She’s been in the ICU for over a week now," Kelley wrote.
It's not clear where Retton is being treated. She currently lives in Houston, Texas.
"Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details. However, I will disclose that she not insured," Kelley continued. "We ask that if you could help in any way, that 1) you PRAY! and 2) if you could help us with finances for the hospital bill. ANYTHING, absolutely anything, would be so helpful for my family and my mom."
Shortly after the fundraiser went live, it shattered its goal of $50,000. As of Wednesday morning, more than $192,000 had been raised and more than 4,100 people have donated.
Retton became an American icon during the 1984 Summer Olympics, when she became the first U.S. gymnast to win all-around gold, along with perfect "10" scores in the floor and vault. She was inducted into the Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
