Mets fans were up late Wednesday night celebrating the news of Francisco Lindor’s 10-year contract extension, but they’ll have to wait to see their new face of the franchise make his anticipated debut.

Thursday’s season opener between the Mets and Nationals has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues, and in the official statement, the Nationals also said that the game will not be made up on Friday's off-day "out of an abundance of caution."

Washington general manager Mike Rizzo told reporters on Wednesday that the Nationals had a positive COVID-19 test within the team, with four others being deemed close contact. The original plan, per Rizzo, was to move forward with the game and Washington would bring players up from its camp in Fredericksburg, but that outlook obviously changed over the next 18 hours.

The two teams are, as of now, still scheduled to play on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer were the scheduled Opening Day starters.

According to Jeff Passan, there are fears within the Nationals organization that “at least one more positive” test followed Wednesday’s case. This marks the second straight year that Washington has dealt with a COVID-19 issue, as star outfielder Juan Soto tested positive and missed the 2020 season opener.
