Missouri police officers rescued a helpless, stranded dog from a hot car after discovering its owner had been shot and killed.

Officers in Springfield, Mo. responded to a fatal shooting outside a Walmart Neighborhood Market Wednesday around noon.

Investigators say a man parked near the store’s entrance was approached by a bystander, resulting in the deadly shooting.

Nearly two hours after the shooting, police responded to a call about the victim’s dog stuck inside a hot car. The temperature rounded out around 90 degrees Fahrenheit in Springfield Wednesday.

Officers rescued the husky named Zeke. Fortunately, the victim’s car doors had been left unlocked.

Zeke spent the night at the vet before being reunited with family members Thursday.

“Zeke is doing well,” the Springfield Police Department said in a post on its Facebook page thanking a good samaritan who paid for Zeke’s overnight doctor’s visit.
