EAST LANSING, Mich. (KNX) – When shots rang out at the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing Monday night, SaMya Overall was across the street in the newsroom for The State News, the student newspaper.
The 21-year-old, who serves as the Editor in Chief, told LA Morning News she knew she and her peers had to alert students.
“We tried to be as clear as we could for people to stay in place, stay quiet, stay barricaded and it was terrifying because we were right across the street,” she explained. “But we just had to make sure that everyone was as safe as possible and do our part and I think now a lot emotions are actually coming out of what actually happened to us.”
During the night’s coverage, Overall said she made judgment calls using her gut.
“I had to lock away the feelings of fear and go for it because I knew that there were over 60 student journalists who were waiting on me to make a call and figure out what was the best thing to do for this tragedy as a student paper, as a student voice,” she said.
Overall said she is processing the tragedy.
“I’m scared and I haven’t been scared at MSU in a long time,” she said.
The shooting left three people dead and five injured. The gunman, identified as 43-year-old Anthony McRae, also took his own life.
