A NASCAR legend is helping Ukrainians defend themselves from the continued Russian invasion by promising to donate one million rounds of ammunition.
Richard Childress, a Hall of Fame driver and team owner, said he was inspired by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's passion to defend his country.
"I was listening the other day to President Zelensky say he didn't want out, he wanted ammunition," Childress said during an interview with Fox News on Wednesday.
Childress went on to say that he called his friend Fred Wagenhals, the Chairman of AMMO, Inc., who jumped at the chance to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine in support of their fight for independence and freedom.
AMMO, Inc. has made producing the ammunition its "number one priority," Childress said, but delivering all those rounds to Ukraine takes a bit of logistics.
"We're working with some government agencies, but to get it there quickly, we're going to work through a private company that will be working to get it in there," Childress said. "The number one ammo that they're needing right now over there is the 7.62s, and that's what we're going to be producing."
Childress said the current situation in Ukraine is a "wakeup call for Americans on why we have to have our second amendment."
"To see the people in Ukraine fighting, it's terrible to see the lives that are being lost over there," he added. "We have to do all we can, and I felt that with AMMO, Inc. and myself, we were doing the right thing."
In a statement, Wagenhals said AMMO, Inc. stands firmly in support of Ukraine's sovereignty as the company believes in freedom and democracy everywhere.
"We condemn the Russian aggression and its threat to Ukraine's territorial integrity and freedom," he said. "We are prepared to move quickly as possible to support Ukraine as it continues to defend itself and its freedom."
Childress is a member of AMMO, Inc.'s board of directors and has a personal net worth estimated at $250 million, according to Fox News.
