Nearly half of football fans would choose a Super Bowl win over true love - it's more than 70% for Lions fans

In the U.S., February has two major days to remember: Valentine’s Day and the Super Bowl.

So, would you rather find true love to celebrate with on Feb. 14 or see your favorite team win the big game? Ahead of Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9, a new survey has found that nearly half of football fans (48%) would rather see their team win.

Sports platform Wetten.com conducted the survey of 2,000 single NFL fans this month. When broken down into men and women, more than half of female sports fans (51%) said they would rather see their team win the Super Bowl, while just 46% said they would rather see that than find true love.

It looks like the Detroit Lions have the most dedicated fans – or at least the ones who would give up true love to see the team win the big game. A whopping 74% of Lions fans said they would prefer the Super Bowl win and 78% of football fans living in Michigan agreed. Up until the Washington Commanders beat them last Saturday, it looked like that dream might have come true this year.

Now, the Commanders are still in the running to win the Lombardi Trophy in the Super Bowl at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La., along with the Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs. Out of these teams, it looks like Bills fans would be the most willing to forego true love – 58% would rather see the team win. In second came the Commanders fans at 54%, followed by fans of the Kansas City Chiefs – the reigning champions – at 52% and Philadelphia Eagles fans at 51%.

“When it comes to romance, the New England Patriots fans lead the pack. They’d rather find love than see their team win the Super Bowl, with only 22% choosing the win,” said Wetten.com. “Understandable – the Patriots, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers, hold the record for the most Super Bowl victories, each with six titles. After all those wins, it makes sense that the focus has now shifted to finding love.”

However, that’s not always the case. Even though the Jacksonville Jaguars have yet to secure a Super Bowl title, only 31% of their fans would choose a Super Bowl win over finding true love. In Alabama, a state without its own NFL team (though it is home to the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide), 73% of people said they would rather see their team win.
