The gunman in the Cook’s Corner mass shooting in Trabuco Canyon and his wife were going through a divorce, the woman’s brother told KNX News’ Margaret Carrero.
Michael Phillips, whose sister Marie was one of the six people hospitalized, said John Snowling and Marie had been married since 1988.
“She was never happier than that early part of the marriage,” Phillips recalled.
Phillips added that while the couple were going through a divorce, there was no indication that “anything like this would transpire.”
“They were riding motorcycles together and going on trips and trying to patch it up,” he said.
O.C. District Attorney Todd Spitzer confirmed to KNX News that Snowling was looking for his wife when he entered the infamous biker bar.
Marie was reportedly taken to USCI Medical Center, according to the Orange County Register. William Mosby, Marie’s father, told the outlet, “Her friend in the bar said she was shot in the lower jaw.”
Her current condition is unknown.
As far as Phillips is concerned about his brother-in-law, he said Snowling “must’ve been drunk or out of his mind.”
“There’s no excuse, there’s no understanding,” he said. “But the pain and shock of it and…let’s gets these cops the mental health they need.”
Snowling, a retired Ventura County Police Department sergeant, went into Cook’s Corner and opened fire, killing three people. Snowling was shot and killed by an O.C. Sheriff’s deputy
