WASHINGTON, DC - More than half of President Donald Trump's supporters during his 2020 presidential campaign believe he should be prosecuted for his role in inciting the mob to storm the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, according to a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll.

On the other hand, about 54% believe he should be allowed to run for a seat in the Executive Branch.

Announced on Monday, this figure comes straight from the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll in collaboration with Harvard University's Center for American Political Studies and Harris Insights and Analytics. The Harris Poll releases results monthly, reflecting the views of approximately 2,000 registered voters on a variety of timely political issues.

"Indicting Trump over January 6 would be an explosively divisive issue in the country," says the poll's co-director Mark Penn. He continues, "Despite a majority that would indict him, most questions split down the middle along partisan lines and it’s not clear they would convict him. There is far greater support for healing the country over indicting politicians, but Trump is seen as bearing a good share of personal responsibility,"

This poll comes amid reports that Trump's team is secretly preparing for the possibility of charges and after the man himself has talked about running again for office to stay out of the crosshairs of criminal charges.

In recent months, Trump "has made clear to associates that the legal protections of occupying the Oval Office are front-of-mind for him," according to Rolling Stone.

Citing four people with knowledge of the situation, Rolling Stone says Trump has "spoken about how when you are the president of the United States, it is tough for politically motivated prosecutors to get to you."
