Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Anthony Bass is engaged in a heated staredown, but not from the pitcher’s mound and not against an opposing batter.

Bass touched off a social media firestorm after he tweeted that a United Airlines flight attendant made his pregnant wife get on her hands and knees to clean up popcorn dropped by their toddler.

Bass’s wife Sydney Rae James is 22 weeks pregnant and was traveling Sunday with their two children, 5 and 2, when the younger daughter dropped some of her popcorn on the ground mid-flight.

James’s sister, country singer Jessie James Decker, made a post of her own.

“My poor sister is on her hands and knees crying in the aisle, completely humiliated and exhausted with her children, while everyone else watched,” Decker wrote on a now-expired Instagram story, according to NBC Los Angeles and Access Hollywood.

So far, United Airlines has declined to comment, but the Association of Flight Attendants, the union that represents crew members at United, did offer a statement.

“We want this space to serve the needs of everyone on the plane and that takes strict safety rules and a recognition that we’re sharing the aircraft cabin to do something we can’t do alone,” the union wrote.

However, they did not address this situation specifically.

“It wouldn’t be a day in aviation without a raging debate on Twitter over an event in the air, even if we don’t have all of the facts,” they wrote. “Our experience tells us that commenting on this specific incident without all of the information likely won’t help.”
