Matthew Greene, a 34-year-old from Syracuse, New York and self-proclaimed member of the Proud Boys, has pleaded guilty in federal court in Washington, D.C. to two criminal charges: conspiracy and obstruction of an official proceeding, related to the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Greene is the first member of the Proud Boys to plead guilty, and is expected to cooperate with the government's investigation and give important information.
His cooperation is in exchange for a reduced prison sentence and the dismissal of several other charges that had been pending against him.
Greene was arrested in April and has been detained in government custody for months. He was indicted alongside Proud Boys members William Pepe and Dominic Pezzola. Pezzola allegedly broke a U.S. Capitol window with a police shield to enter the building.
Judge Timothy Kelly spoke with Greene via video on Wednesday and said under federal sentencing guidelines, he could face between 41 months and 51 months in prison, with a fine between $15,000 and $150,000.
Greene was asked if he wanted to give up his right to a jury trial and plead guilty, to which he replied, "I do, your honor."
According to prosecutors, Greene and two others pushed through police barriers on the Capitol grounds and followed Proud Boys leaders' instruction via radio.
Greene will remain incarcerated before his sentencing hearing scheduled for March 10.
