St. Louis (KMOX) - The Department of Homeland Security bumped back its deadline requiring air travelers to have a Real ID compliant license by 19 months.

The deadline was October 1, 2021. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will now be May 3, 2023. DHS says the pandemic has significantly impacted states' ability to issue Real IDs. Many agencies are operating at a limited capacity.

The rule does remain the same. Anyone 18 years of age and older must have a Real ID compliant license to board a domestic flight in the United States. If you don't, you will need another acceptable form of identification such as a passport.

Real ID is also required for access to federal facilities.

DHS says just 43% of all state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards in the country are currently compliant.
