Stonehenge. This prehistoric stone circle located on the Salisbury Plain in England is a mystery that’s puzzled researchers and the public alike for ages.
Now, new findings about Stonehenge that have revealed yet another mystery related to the ancient landmark. Researchers who recently published a study in the Nature journal have determined that the “Altar Stone” that sits at the formation’s center is from the northeast part of Scotland, over 450 miles away from Stonehenge.
How did it get there before the wheel was even invented? Anthony Clarke, a researcher from Curtin University and one of the study authors, joined “Something Offbeat” to discuss the new puzzle.
“The old stone has some very ancient grains within it,” he said of the Altar Stone. “Up to 3 billion years old, which is well over 70% of the age of the earth. The only place in the UK where you get such old, ancient bedrock is Scotland.”
