Spring begins this morning around a quarter to ten. What we can expect of the season?
"We're on the back end of a La Niña, and La Niñas tend to be warmer than normal, and dryer than normal, across Louisiana," said LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim. "That has been a pattern that we have been in, on and off, for the past for or five six months."
That does not mean no rain at all, of course. La Niña means we will not get as much rain-producing Gulf moisture as we would in a normal spring, but some fronts may still make their way through.
And warmer than normal weather may be welcome after parts of the area dipped below freezing earlier this week.
"Just a few days ago we were looking at record low temperatures at many sites across Louisiana," said Keim.
Keim says conditions look favorable for a transition to El Niño as we get into the summer months, which would indicate a below-average Atlantic hurricane season.
