When a young man broke into an Ohio father’s house this July, the homeowner shot and killed him, according to local authorities.
A grand jury has decided (8-1) that the shooter will not be indicted for a felony regarding 22-year-old James Douglas Rayl’s death, said a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office news release cited by Dayton 24/7 Now.
Shelby County Sherriff James Frye and Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell advised the grand jury on Ohio law, including “Stand Your Ground” and “Castle Doctrine” laws recently enacted by the Ohio State legislature. These laws allow citizens to protect themselves in certain circumstances.
Ring doorbell videos, 911 recordings, multiple photographs of the scene, a recorded interview of the homeowner, and the conclusions of the coroner were bits of evidence Sell provided the grand jury.
News Center 7 obtained the doorbell video via an information request. According to the outlet, Rayl appeared to force his way into a home in 2900 block of North Kuther Road on July 31. After being told to leave and informed that the homeowner had a gun, Rayl pounded on the door of the home.
According to Dayton 24/7 Now, police received a 911 call from the 2900 block of North Kuther Road in Sidney, Ohio, regarding the incident. Call recordings identify Rayl as an ex-boyfriend of the homeowner’s daughter. She had broken up with him a year and a half prior to the incident and shared a voicemail Rayl left her with authorities.
“He’s trying the door dad... dad… dad. Is he trying to kill me?” she said in 911 recording, according to News Center 7.
Rayl then “shouldered the door several times, eventually breaking the door open and he started to enter the residence,” said Dayton 24/7 Now. As Rayl attempted to entered the home, its owner shot three times, said Frye.
Rayl staggered and fell in front of the garage when he was hit, said the sheriff’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Daily Mail identified Mitchell Duckro, 52, as the homeowner. According to the outlet, it obtained footage of an interview between Duckro and officers at the Shelby County Sheriff’s office.
“Sheriff Frye and Prosecutor Sell extend their sympathies to the family of James Rayl in the loss of their loved one, and to all affected by this incident,” said Dayton 24/7 Now.
