Former President Donald Trump is one of the targets of a lawsuit filed in the District of Columbia by seven members of the U.S. Capitol police force.
The lawsuit also names organizers of the Stop the Steal rally and a number of members of extremist groups on the far-right including the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys, alleging the responsibility for the January 6 insurrection in Washington, D.C., falls on their shoulders.
"Plaintiffs and their fellow law enforcement officers risked their lives to defend the Capitol from a violent, mass attack — an attack provoked, aided, and joined by Defendants in an unlawful effort to use force, intimidation, and threats to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 Presidential election,” read the lawsuit.
"Because of Defendants' unlawful actions, Plaintiffs were violently assaulted, spat on, tear-gassed, bear-sprayed, subjected to racial slurs and epithets, and put in fear for their lives," the suit continues. "Plaintiffs' injuries, which Defendants caused, persist to this day."
Spanning 71 pages, the suit ties the riot directly to the lies about election fraud, saying the defendants “incited violence against members of Congress and the law enforcement officers whose job it was to protect them.”
In all, more than 140 officers were injured in the events of January 6.
