A person rushed on stage and attacked Dave Chappelle at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles Tuesday night during a Netflix comedy festival.
Attendees said a team of at least 10 people quickly and violently responded to the person who ran on stage and tackled Chappelle.
BuzzFeed reporter Brianna Sacks said the comedian was wrapping his set when the person ran on stage, tackling him to the ground. Sacks said people who appeared to be part of Chappelle's security detail punched and kicked the attacker.
Coincidentally, attendees said that Chappelle had just mentioned how he'd hired more security because of the response to his last Netflix comedy special and jokes about the transgender community.
Jamie Foxx came out shortly after, joining Chappelle on stage, joking about the incident while the guy was still reportedly being subdued and allegedly beaten just behind them on stage.
"It was a trans man," Chappelle roared as some crowd laughed.
Chris Rock, who performed earlier in the night, returned to the stage and asked the crowd, "Was that Will Smith?"
Video from outside the Hollywood Bowl showed first responders loading a man who people said was the attacker into an ambulance. The person's arm appeared to be badly injured, and police appeared to have strapped the man to the gurney.
Chappelle had performed as part of the Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival the company advertised was "taking over L.A." from April 28 to May 8.
Police confirmed they took a man into custody around 10:45 p.m. at the Hollywood Bowl, KABC reported, noting the person was armed with a gun and a knife.
It's unclear what the person's motivation was for running on stage.
"Sheer chaos," Sacks said. "F*cking wild."
