SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – “I mean, body image is very hard,” said “It’s Generational” panelist Jessica Lanyadoo, an astrologer and psychic medium.

She’s right.

From the silver screen pressures of the baby boom era, to the “heroin chic” look that dominated Gen X culture and the new social media aesthetics impressed upon millennials and Gen Z , messages about bodies are – and have been – complicated.

All of these messages have made it sort of hard to love our bodies. In fact, according to a 2021 YouGov study, more than half of Americans felt pressured to have a certain body type.

Our bodies allow us to do all the things we love, to go places, experience things. Should it be that hard to love them?

This week on “It’s Generational” a multigenerational panel tackled this age-old topic that has ever changing dimensions.

“We see that body image concerns continue to be one of the top issues among young people,” said Dr. Ciara Mahon, a research fellow at University College Dublin, who joined the show to explain what research reveals about body image. “And since COVID 19… a rise in body image concerns and eating disorders among young people,” has been recorded, she said.

Lanyadoo, our Gen X panelist, talked about the issue with baby boomer KCBS news anchor/reporter Jim Taylor and two millennial-Gen Z cuspers – journalist Nic F. Anderson, a student at the Craig Newmark School of Journalism and Harris Mojadedi,  assistant dean at the University of California, Berkeley.
