(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One person was killed, and at least 20 people were shot early Sunday near the Willowbrook Shopping Center, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said it responded shortly after midnight to reports of shots fired in a group of 200 – 300 people at Route 83 and Honeysuckle Rose Lane.
Witnesses said they were gathered for what was supposed to be a Juneteenth celebration.
“The motive behind this incident is unclear, and this is still an active investigation,” said Eric Swanson, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office deputy chief.
The ages and conditions of the victims were not immediately available, officials said.
Swanson said first responders transported “numerous” victims to local hospitals while others walked into area hospitals.
Another witness, Craig Lotcie, said: “Everybody ran, and it was chaos.”
Police said anyone with knowledge of the shooting should contact local authorities.
