JEFFERSON CITY (KMOX) - Nearly two dozen attorneys general signed a letter to Senate leaders calling for a quick confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court. She was nominated by President Donald Trump after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last month.

Missouri attorney general Eric Schmitt was among the letter signees which states "Judge Barrett is a distinguished legal scholar and an exceptional appellate judge with a track record of interpreting the Constitution according to its text and original public meaning."

In a tweet, Schmitt said Barrett "is an incredible jurist & a legal trailblazer who understands & respects the law & our founding principles. Her experience speaks for itself & she'd make a spectacular Justice. I urge the Senate to confirm her."

The attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia signed the letter.

U.S. Senators from Missouri, Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley, are both expected to vote in favor of confirming Barrett before Election Day.

A report by the Washington Post found it has taken an average of about 70 days for the Senate to confirm a justice to the Supreme Court since 1975.
