St. Louis (KMOX) -- The Rockwood School District just sent a letter to parents, telling them masks are mandated indoors for the upcoming school year. The requirement is for everyone who comes on campus, and is in effect immediately.

Wearing masks outdoors is optional.

The letter from Interim Superintendent Tom Ricker also says staff and eligible students are encouraged to get vaccinated if they have not already. They're also asking parents to inform the district if they child has been vaccinated, although that request is "strictly voluntary".

Ricker's letter says Rockwood understands there has been "much debate across the country" related to what's best for students in another school year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rockwood is the largest school district in St. Louis County.
