ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - One day after reaching a deal to reunite with Lance Lynn, the Cardinals add another pitcher, as they have signed RHP Kyle Gibson, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale was first to report the news Gibson was joining the Cardinals.

The deal will be similar to Lynn as it is a one-year deal with a 2025 option. ESPN's Jesse Rogers reports that the deal is worth $12 million.

The former Mizzou grad spent the last season with the Baltimore Orioles, where pitched a 4.73 ERA in 192 innings.

The Cardinals continue their pursuits of pitching by going after Gibson and Lynn the past two days. While neither had impressive seasons, both pitchers were still pretty durable, a pitching a combined 375.2 innings.

While the goal for the Cardinals have been to go after pitchers that generate swing and miss, it seems the early trend for the team has been to also go after pitchers who are durable.

With the Cardinals set to losing a combined 460.1 innings from last year's rotation, finding pitchers who could eat up innings seems to also be an early emphasis the team this offseason.

The Cardinals could certainly put Lynn in both categories, while despite allowing 44 home runs last year, he was still durable and struck out nearly 200 batters last year.

But Gibson seems to only fit the latter category. He hasn't generated a whole lot of swing and miss over his career, striking out only 18% batters in his career and pitched a K/9 of only 7.36 last year for the Orioles.

The move will reunite Lynn and Gibson together again for the third time. Both pitchers played with each other when they were both with the Minnesota Twins in 2018 and during the shortened pandemic season of 2020 with the Texas Rangers.
