Governor Mike Parson signs two bills on trans health care and trans athletes

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It's the news parents of transgender children feared....Governor Mike Parson has signed two bills that will ban transgender health care for all minors and some adults. The exception is for minors who already are receiving care, they may continue treatment.

The law takes effect August 28th and means Missouri Health Care providers will not be able to prescribe transgender affirming treatment. Most adults will still have access to care, but Medicaid will not cover it.


Additionally, gender affirming surgeries for inmates and prisoners is outlawed.

Governor Parson's signature also means transgender girls and women cannot play on female sports teams from Kindergarten to College.

This law applies to elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education institutions, including private schools, public school districts, public charter schools, public colleges and universities, and private colleges and universities.

There are a total of eight trans high school athletes statewide. According to the Missouri State High School Activities Association, since the application process opened in 2016, thirteen students have applied.
