(KMOX) - The field of politicians is getting thick for the U.S. Senate seat from Missouri that will be open in 2022 and a former NASCAR driver who hails from the state has addressed rumors of his potential run.

Carl Edwards, the 28-time NASCAR winner, who was born in Columbia, was asked by the Kansas City Star if he's ready for a political career:

"I don’t have an active campaign going on. But I do believe in America, and I really do believe in the founding principles and individual freedom and liberty and sustainability of our way of life. There might be a day when I’m able to help with that. I’ve told people my views and that I care. That’s why my name gets brought up. I care about America."

This isn't the first time his name has come up for a Senate seat. In 2018, before Sen. Josh Hawley defeated incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill, Edwards was a celebrity name rumored to be in the mix.

He ultimately decided not to run, giving an answer very similar to the on he gave this week to the KC Star.

"I believe firmly in the principles that the U.S. was founded upon. If I could help, I definitely would consider it," he told The Associated Press in 2017.

Edwards retired from driving after the 2016 season.

If he does join the Senate race, he'd be facing former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens and current Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, who have already announced their campaigns. Also, St. Louis lawyer Mark McCloskey who made headlines last summer when he and his wife Patricia stood on their lawn with guns to protect themselves from protestors marching past their home is considering a run for the seat.
