President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign is suing New Jersey over Gov. Phil Murphy’s plan for mostly mail-in voting in the November elections, claiming the plan is unconstitutional.
In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for New Jersey on Tuesday, the campaign contended that the power to change the state’s election law lies with the legislature, not with the governor.
The campaign also charged that the order “will violate eligible citizens’ right to vote.”

Trump has spoken out repeatedly against mail-in voting, claiming it’s susceptible to voter fraud. Experts have challenged those claims, saying fraud is rare in U.S. elections.
Murphy said last week he planned to keep many polling places in the state closed to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Under the plan, all 6.2 million registered voters in the state would be sent ballots in the mail for the Nov. 3 election. Voters can mail in their ballots if they’re postmarked by Nov. 3 or take them to official drop boxes throughout each county.
A select number of polling places would remain open for people who want to cast their ballot in-person.
