There is a rise of viral particles in waste water across the Midwest according to Dr. Alex Garza with SSM Health.
He explains "they test the wastewater to see how many viral particles are in there. So what we've been seeing here recently is an uptick in the amount of viral particles you're finding in the wastewater."
Dr. Garza says this shows COVID is on the rise but what it doesn't provide is many details beyond that.
"It obviously means that there's more COVID circulating amongst the community but it's hard to say, 'well does that translate into more people having symptoms or more people being sick enough to go to the hospital'."
Dr. Garza adds Missouri is one of the country's leaders in testing it's waste water for viral particles. Garza says waste waters surveillance is a newer program which started because of COVID.
