ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Record-breaking low temperatures and a rain-snow mix are in the forecast this week for the St. Louis area and other parts of Missouri. It may make for some of the all-time coldest days on record this late in April.

A very cold air mass is working its way into the region and temperatures could fall into the 20s for a few hours Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. This will come after a predicted high of 70 degrees on Monday.

The National Weather Service advises to take steps to protect your plants from the cold.

If the temperature falls to 31 degrees or below in St. Louis on Wednesday, it will be the coldest April 21st on record, beating the current record of 32 degrees set in 1904.

There's a chance for some wet snow to also accumulate on Tuesday, between 3 a.m. and noon in the region. If it snows in Columbia, it would tie a record and be the first measurable snowfall on April 20 since 1890.
