ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the St. Louis metro area, and part of Missouri and Illinois due to conditions being "favorable for extreme fire behavior."
The National Weather Service says "Red Flag Warnings" mean "critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly." A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
From 1 - 6 p.m. on Wednesday, citizens in the area are being asked to:
- Be extremely careful with open flames.
- Consider burning on a different day.
- Be sure campfires are completely extinguished.
Today's forecast includes gusty winds up to 40 mph and warm weather. The recent lack of rain and low relative humidity during the afternoon are also contributing to the fire danger.
