New technology means new cyber risks in New Year

Fortinet's annual threat assessment highlights 5G, smart homes as risks

SUNNYVALE, CA (KMOX) - 2021 could be the year of the cyber criminal.

Cyber security firm Fortinet says 5G, smart-homes, and technology integration in business all create new opportunities for hackers.

The company's annual threat assessment warns that 5G networks connecting multiple personal devices could increase swarm attacks where cyber criminals link devices into subgroups to get real-time info on vulnerabilities.

Along with that, smart devices or other home-based systems could be what Fortinet calls "conduits" for deeper attacks, where hackers use routines and habits to develop more sophisticated ransom or extortion schemes.

And the firm warns that trends in business to link information technology with operational technology could put critical systems at risk.
