According to the results of a crowded Ohio Republican primary, former President Donald Trump has managed to hold on to his status as a “kingmaker” for the party.
Out of a pool of 11 candidates for Ohio’s 15th district Republican nomination for House Rep – including many with high-profile endorsements – Mike Carey, the candidate backed by Trump, came out on top, reported the Associated Press. Carey, a coal industry lobbyist, is a newcomer to politics.

While Carey had Trump’s support, other contenders had endorsements from former Rep. Steve Stivers, also a Republican, who resigned in May to lead the Ohio Chamber of Commerce; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and State Rep. Ron Hood, among others.
Stivers, who endorsed State Rep. Jeff LaRe, pledged his support to Carey after election results came in.
Going into the race, some questioned whether Trump’s endorsement of Carey would be enough to snag the nomination for the Columbus area House seat. Earlier this summer, Trump-backed candidate Susan Wright lost a special election in Texas.
Carey will run against Democratic State Rep. Allison Russo, a health policy consultant who won her party’s nomination against retired Army General Greg Betts, for the seat in November.
