The Kansas Highway Patrol says five people have died as a result of a crash on I-70 near Maple Hill, in Wabaunsee County to the west of Topeka.
WIBW-TV reports a Ford truck was headed in the wrong direction on I-70. Troopers could not catch up with it in time and the truck collided head-on with a van.
The crash killed four people in the van and one person in the truck. One other person in the van was taken to a Topeka hospital and is listed in critical condition.
The westbound lanes of I-70 near Carlson Road have been shut down at this time, and traffic is being rerouted to U.S. Highway 24. There's no word on when I-70 will reopen.
