Former Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer has died

Carl Brewer, the former mayor of Wichita, has died.

KSN confirmed the news with Brewer’s sister. She says he died from ongoing health issues.

Current Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple says Brewer passed away overnight. He says Brewer was a great mentor to him and to many others.

Carl Brewer was 63.

The following statement on behalf of the family of Carl Brewer:

“Former Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer passed away Friday morning. There are no details available for a memorial service at this time but we will provide an update at a future date. The family appreciates the support they have received from the community. They ask for privacy at this time.”

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a statement saying that she is grateful for Brewer’s service to her administration, both during the transition and later on the Governor’s Council on Tax Reform.

“Carl truly embodied all of the best qualities of what it means to be a Kansan, and he will be dearly missed,” she said.

Brewer served in the Kansas Army National Guard.

He was first elected as Wichita mayor in 2007. He was reelected in 2011.

In addition to serving two terms as Wichita mayor, Brewer also spent six years as a member of the City Council.

In 2017, Brewer announced his candidacy for Kansas governor, running as a Democrat. He lost in the Primary.

In 2019, he was back in the news, supporting a write-in campaign to get Lyndy Wells elected as mayor.
