Wesley Hospital:  Fireworks injuries compiled

Now that the final tallies are in, Wesley Hospital has posted the numbers of fireworks-related injuries seen at Wesley Healthcare.

Here is the breakdown:

Wesley Medical Center

  • ·         Fireworks injuries seen July1-July 3:  0
  • ·         July 4 fireworks injuries: 3
  • ·         Types of injuries: face (mortar), eye (unknown), and “eye/globe rupture” from a mortar, causing permanent damage.
  • ·         Disposition: All were treated and released.
  • ·         Total fireworks-related injuries last year (2019): 4

Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER:

  • ·         Fireworks injuries seen July1-July 3:  0
  • ·         July 4 fireworks injuries: 2
  • ·         Types of injuries: arms and face from sparkler, eye laceration from “parachute can.”
  • ·         Disposition: All were treated and released.
  • ·         Total fireworks-related injuries last year (2019): 4

 

Wesley West ER:
  • ·         Fireworks injuries seen July 1-July 3: 2
  • ·         July 4 fireworks injuries: 7
  • ·         Types of injuries: Burns and injuries to the hand (2), finger (1), foot (1), abdomen and legs (1), thigh and scrotum (1), arm (2), eye (1) from a smoke bomb, roman candles, mortars, spinners, “adult snapper,” and sparklers.
  • ·         All were treated and released.
  • ·         Total fireworks-related injuries last year (2019): 5

Wesley Derby ER:

  • ·         Fireworks injuries seen June 30 -July 3: 1
  • ·         July 4 fireworks injuries:  8
  • ·         Types of injuries: Hand, right index and middle fingers, temple, calf (2), partial amputation of ring and pinkie finger from a roman candle, arm, leg, and abrasion to scalp. From various fireworks, including: sparklers, smoke bombs, zipper, “firework lady,” and roman candles.
  • ·         Disposition: All were treated and released.
  • ·         Total fireworks-related injuries last year (2019): 2
