The Wichita City Council approved another design-build amendment for the new downtown ballpark.
This amendment covers the cost of such items as remaining floor and ceiling finishes, seating for the right field picnic and terrace areas and public art components.
The total cost to date for the new stadium is nearly $71.6 million. Including street and infrastructure costs of nearly $6.4 million, the entire price tag for the project is nearly $78 million.
Council member Jeff Blubaugh gave high praises to the entire team for their work, saying “It's just remarkable to me. Everybody thought there's no way they could do this in the short amount of time and everybody has just pulled together."
The Wichita Wind Surge will host its first ballgame on April 14th against the Memphis Redbirds.
In other related downtown news, the council approved to amend the community improvement district around the new stadium. The CID will add a 2 percent sales tax to this area, for a period of up to 22 years to help fund $13 million dollars of the project's cost. The amendment took out and also added some areas from the previous CID boundaries.
