The Wichita Police Department has made multiple arrests, following protests that became violent after the death of George Floyd -- who died while in police custody last week in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Two of those arrestees have now been released from custody.
*Police arrested a 20-year-old Wichita man and a 19-year-old Park City man, both on charges of suspicion for incitement to riot -- but Wichita city council-member Brandon Johnson says both men were released on their on recognizance. At around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sedgwick County jail records show the two men were released without prejudice. On Wednesday, the WPD received information about a social media post encouraging others to meet at 21st & Arkansas in the northwest part of Wichita at 7 p.m., and then traveling to other parts of Sedgwick County and engaging in violent behavior. Police say the investigation revealed the two men were responsible for the post that was shared thousands of times throughout Sedgwick County and surrounding areas, causing fear and panic to citizens and business owners. On Wednesday evening, officers located the suspects, and they were arrested without incident. “Those who promote and engage in violence will be arrested,” said Police Chief Gordon Ramsay. “They will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including federal charges.” Police said the case will be presented to the United States Attorney’s Office.
*Police arrested 19-year-old Dimitri Fernandez of Wichita on charges of reckless driving, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and outstanding warrants. The arrest stems from an investigation regarding recent protests. On Monday, a WPD officer observed the driver of a white Dodge Ram driving recklessly at 21st and Arkansas. Through the investigation, officers identified Fernandez as the driver. On Wednesday evening, officers saw him driving the same Dodge Ram again at 21st and Arkansas. Officers stopped him, and he was arrested without incident. After his arrest, officers found drugs and drug paraphernalia in his possession. Additionally, Fernandez has previously been arrested and convicted on charges of burglary and theft.
*Police arrested 23-year-old Dylan Yohe of Wichita on charges of DUI, driving while revoked, transport open container, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and an aggravated weapons violation. After 12:30 a.m. Thursday, officers who were proactively patrolling the area near 21st & Arkansas observed Yohe driving a maroon Dodge Dakota. Yohe was known by officers to have a revoked driver’s license, and conducted a traffic stop at Franklin and Nims. During the traffic stop, officers located marijuana, drug paraphernalia, an open liquor bottle, and a knife in the vehicle. Additionally, Yohe has previously been arrested and convicted on charges of carrying a concealed firearm, and traffic charges. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
