On Oct. 11, 2023, University of Maryland Global Campus’s Fort Meade team held their annual Spotlight on Cyber Security event at the McGill Training Center on the Fort Meade Army base, which is home to several military units including the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).
This event provides academic and career-planning support to military personnel who may be interested in a cybersecurity career, with an emphasis on network and information security. Each year, the Spotlight event is instrumental in connecting Fort Meade area employers with military-affiliated students.
The Spotlight on Security is a three-part event. The first portion of the event is a presentation/demonstration from UMGC’s Department of Cybersecurity & Information Technology covering updates and new developments in the field. Following the presentation was a moderated employer panel discussion, with representatives from Amazon Web Services, CACI, Intelligent Waves, TISTA, and DISA answering questions from event attendees around emerging cybersecurity trends & threats; best practices in managing the human elements of cyber & IT; and employment & career opportunities in the field. Following the panel discussion, representatives and recruiters from the different companies interacted with the attendees, discussing job opportunities, and addressing additional questions which may have been posed during the panel discussion.
Additionally, representatives from Fort Meade’s Army, Air Force and Navy Education centers attended the event, along with VA representatives from Department of Veterans Affairs Vet Success on Campus program. Since Fort Meade is one of the Department of Defense’s major cybersecurity hubs, UMGC’s Spotlight on Security events serves the “Team Meade” military community by connecting educators, employers and government resources – all to assist in meeting students’ academic, career and professional goals.
