(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker urged Congress to impeach and remove President Trump from office after pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol Wednesday.
The Democratic governor made his statement on Twitter after he had to deploy state police to the Statehouse and government buildings in Springfield.
“As the heart of our democracy was under siege and blood was literally being spilled in our most sacred halls, Donald Trump was praising the attackers,” Pritzker said. “There are real questions about what efforts the President made to protect our Congress or what obstructions he committed that has prevented the ending of the siege.”
Pritzker said Trump’s "efforts to encourage a coup represent high treason” and make him a “danger to our nation.” He called on Congress to impeach and remove the Republican commander-in-chief, even though his term ends Jan. 20.
Trump, in a video posted to Twitter, continued insisting he won the 2020 presidential election (he did not; Democrat Joe Biden did) as he encouraged disgruntled supporters to be peaceful. He later tweeted for the mob to go “home,” but police had to roust the protesters from the building and grounds.
Pritzker and Trump have feuded in the past, most notably over the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
