120 years ago, in 1901, U.S. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt made a mid-August visit to Hutchinson.

The Vice President was meeting with members of the Grand Army of the Republic, who were holding a state encampment in Hutchinson.

The G.A.R. was a fraternal organization of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War.

Just one month after his trip to Hutchinson, the 42-year-old Roosevelt became president of the United States, following the assassination of president William McKinley.
